Hi, I’m Alaa. I was born and currently live in Alexandria, Egypt: Alexander the Great’s breathtaking Mediterranean cradle of cosmopolitanism. I studied English Language and Literature, ranking 5th in my class, and I am also a CELTA-qualified teacher. Currently, I am pursuing my MA in Innovation in Teaching and Learning at the University of South Wales, UK.
My teaching journey began during my IGCSE study years, when I volunteered to give English courses in a private language school in Alexandria; I taught conversation classes to students of all ages, and gave crash courses to company employees. After graduation, I taught ESL to IGCSE students, then I taught general and academic English to university students.
My passion for teaching didn’t stop there, I even taught teachers! I trained local teachers at the university where I used to work, and gave numerous workshops to teachers at various schools in Alexandria. I also travelled to Lebanon and Spain to attend and speak at teaching conferences, and I studied a Management in Education course in the UK. Next, I am planning to embark on a volunteer teaching journey in Africa!
As a non-native who speaks English proficiently, I totally understand the struggle non-native speakers of English might go through while learning the language. This understanding helps me to identify the challenges my students face and find practical solutions. Students have always enjoyed my classes, I think because I’m always keen to bring real life into the classroom; no one can learn a language in isolation. I use movies, games, shows, social media, videos: all easy and natural means of teaching the language.
I love languages and technically anything related to them. Besides being a native Arabic speaker, and a proficient user of English, I speak French and am learning Spanish. I am also a translator and a freelance writer, as well as a voice-over artist!
When I am not teaching—which is not often—I read novels, write screenplays and poems, go jogging, do yoga, and dance salsa.
Like many of you, I dream of visiting all the countries in the world, and until I do, let’s meet up and squeeze the globe into our classes 😉
